Thank you First Alert for sponsoring this post. October is Fire Prevention Month! Help ensure your home and family are ready for the unexpected by installing smoke & CO alarms and having fire extinguishers!

Do you have smoke alarms and/or CO alarms in your house? What about every room? Every level? Do you know how important that is? For your safety and your families. Your house, your life, your belongings, your sweet babies, you want to protect it all. RIGHT?

I know, the worst thing that can possibly happen, but IT CAN HAPPEN. Are you and your family prepared for that? Fires happen everyday and most people aren’t prepared for that because they think it’ll never happen to them. Fires happen everyday, sometimes you’re cooking and leave it unattended or sometimes something in your garage can start a fire. Either way, you need to be prepared for that moment. With First Alert, you can be prepared for the unexpected.

Ways you can Prepare yourself and your family with First Alert.

 1. Install smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms on every level and in every single bedroom of your home. We’re using the First Alert Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm — it even has a 10-year sealed battery!

2. Test your alarms regularly.

3. Change the batteries in your alarms at least every six months (for convenient protection, upgrade to 10 – year sealed battery alarms to eliminate battery replacements for the life of the alarm, like the First Alert alarm I mentioned above).

***Did you know 3 out of 5 home fires deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms? Ensure you add protection and test your alarms regularly. Ensure you do not remove your alarms or remove the batteries without replacing them. (Source: National Fire Protection Association).

4. Plan and practice your emergency escape plan at least twice a year. Make sure you and your kids understand this plan 100%. Plan two ways out of each room/area of your home and a meeting spot outside, a safe distance from your home. (mailbox, neighbors home, etc.) Once out of your home, stay out and call 911 when you are at your meeting spot.

It’s definitely scary but it’s something that needs to be talked about and prepared for. Aubrey has fire alarms at school for practice and she always comes home and wants to talk about our escape plan. We live in a tiny house so it’s really important that we talk about this and make sure she remembers every single step. Make a checklist, make an escape plan, make sure to change your battery every 6 months. If you get First Alert’s Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm with a 10-Year Sealed Battery, then you won’t have to change the battery for a decade! If you don’t upgrade your system, then you replace your alarm batteries every 6 months and always check them to make sure they are working.

Also consider having a fire extinguisher always available in your kitchen. The one we’re using is the First Alert Home Fire Extinguisher. It’s easy to use and light weight.

Just like you should have a carbon monoxide/smoke alarm in every room and every level, fire extinguishers are just as important to also keep on every level of your home. Especially with everyone being home a lot more lately and cooking more often, you should always have one nearby. Protecting your family is the number 1 most important thing in having a home and of course having a family. Being prepared and making sure your family is prepared. What better time to get prepared (if you aren’t already) then during Fire Prevention Month?
